Last Wednesday night Wes and I went to see Shut Up and Play the Hits, LCD Soundsystem’s final goodbye in the form of a full length feature film documenting their 4 hour concert at Madison Square Garden last April, aka one of the most important musical events of our lifetimes. Of course I didn’t make it to the real show, but this one night screening was definitely the second best option.
The entire experience was oozing with style and… well… coolness. Chuck Klosterman provided fantastic quasi narration as the interviewer of James Murphy and Spike Jonze captured everything beautifully and powerfully. But most importantly the music was electrifying and utterly incendiary! People in the movie theater audience were dancing and cheering along and for an instant I felt as if I were transported to a LCD Soundsystem show. There was even a surreal moment, the kind that only happen at rockshows, when we saw an unbelievable Aziz Ansari crowd surfing in a full suit! It was a night I will always regret missing, but will never forget watching.
